Protest action suspended as the EC Premier announces his visit to Matatiele

Public transport operators in Matatiele, led by the R56 Matatiele Forum have resolved to suspend the five-day protest action. This follows a pronouncement made by the Alfred Nzo District Deputy Executive Mayor, Cllr. Sandile Sello, that the EC Premier will visit the municipality. Premier Phumulo Masualle will tomorrow lead a delegation of MEC’s to Matatiele Local Municipality, where they will as a collective respond to the grievances of the people of Matatiele Local Municipality.

The announcement was made in today’s meeting, facilitated by the Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr. Momelezi Mbedla. The aim of the meeting was to provide a way forward towards putting an end to the protest action. The Mayor started by recapping the activities, engagements and interventions carried out in the past few days. The Department of Roads and Public Works also outlined its impromptu interventions.

Today’s resolution is expected to fully restore peace and order in and around Matatiele, as the Forum leadership is expected to disperse the last remaining crowds blocking roads in Maluti township. Members of the South African Police Service and those responsible for Public Order are still keeping an eye on the ground.

Although it's business as usual in town, shops and offices are operating on skeleton staff as roads are still barricaded. The small number of learners that managed to make it to school is still very much a cause for concern.
