Matatiele local municipality lose two learners to an accident

Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor Cllr. Momelezi Mbedla has expressed shock over the accident that claimed two young lives in Ramafole, Ward 24.  The incident occurred this morning between Matatiele and Mt Fletcher (R56). The scholar transport was ferrying 16 learners to Ramafole Senior Secondary School, under the Alfred Nzo West District when the driver allegedly undertook a miscalculated over-taking exercise. Two Grade 11 learners died on the spot and the other 14 were rushed to Taylor Bequest hospital in Mount Fletcher. Out of the fourteen, the two critical learners were later transferred to Nelson Mandela hospital in Umthatha.

"Just on Friday, the 30th of August, as Matatiele local municipality we were in Ramafole winding up the women’s month in such a joyous mood. Little did we know that we will today be singing a totally different tune”, said the visibly concerned Mayor, Cllr. Momelezi Mbedla.

The Department of Social Development has already been contacted to offer counselling and other support to the affected families, learners and teachers. The meeting to prepare for the memorial service is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date: 03 September 2019
Venue: Ramafole SSS
Time: 09h00

“On behalf of the leadership of Matatiele local municipality, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the families and the school community at large. I want to assure the affected families of our full support during difficult phase”, said the Mayor.
