Municipal Manager's Viewpoint 11/08/2017

Warm greetings to readers of this column.

Our electrification agenda continues

Matatiele local municipality continues to radically address service delivery backlogs, with electricity being one of the main priorities. A number of projects are currently underway at wards 3, 5, 9 and 18 bear witness to this. Through these electricity projects, more than two thousand households are being connected to the national electrification grid and jobs are being created. On the 03rd of August, the Municipality introduced Rock Powerline Electrical – contractor appointed to electrify two hundred and thirty-four households at Mphoshongweni – Nkali in ward 9. The work by Rock Powerline Electrical is set to commence on the 15th of August 2017 and expected to complete the project by February 2018 next year.  Speaking on behalf of the community of Pamlaville village, Mr. Simphiwe Sabisa said “we appreciate the efforts of our Municipality and we promise to cooperate with the appointed contractor during its time with us. We will make sure that there will be no destructions done by any member of the public”.

Update on pothole patching

It is a fact that most of Matatiele LM roads have exceeded their design life span, meaning that they should have been re-constructed a while ago.

Temporary, the municipality is doing pothole patching. It is a fact that the rate at which this is being rolled out is not satisfactory and also the quality. Therefore, external service providers to assist in this regard are being sourced.

The long term solution includes a rehabilitation of these roads: parts of High Street, 2 roads at Buxton Park and 2 roads at North End have already been rehabilitated. There are delays as the municipality is also constructing roads in Maluti, Cedarville and Harry Gwala.

This fiscal year, the municipality will be constructing roads in Mountain View and a consultant was appointed to do designs for the CBD.

The municipality is aware that potholes are not only an inconvenience and expense for motorists, but deadly too. Working together with all sectors a solution will be reached and the municipality is apologizing profusely to all motorists.
