Discovery of the last missing body brings relief to Matatiele community

The community of Matatiele is now breathing a sigh of relief after the body of the last missing child was discovered this afternoon. The body was found at Kinirha river, almost 20km away from the place where the incident happened last Wednesday. Six children from Freystata village, aged between six and eight years were crossing a river on their way home from school when they were washed away by flash floods.

The villagers of Freystata have played a major role towards the discovery of all the six bodies. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the community of Freystata for the unity and dedication they have displayed ever since this incident occurred", said Matatiele local municipality Mayor, Cllr. Momelezi Mbedla.

The municipality also appreciates companies and shops that heeded its call for donations to support community members that have been conducting the search over the past five days. These include Pick N Pay in Matatiele, Odg Technolgies and Shuru Construction.

The memorial service for all the six children will be held on Thursday, the 14th of March at Popopo primary school, whilst the mass funeral is scheduled for Saturday at the same venue.
