MLM launces Men’s Forum on Mandela Day

Men’s forum plays an important role in reversing gender-based inequality and violence. These sentiments were echoed by the people of Moiketsi Reserve in Ward 14, during the launch of Matatiele Men’s Forum yesterday the 18th of July 2019.

The Department of Social Development in partnership with Matatiele Local Municipality, Department of Health and World Vision commemorated the 2019 Mandela Day by launching the Men’s Forum. This, with an idea to motivate, engage, assist and inspire men to be good examples of change in their communities. The main aim is to build a society where all people who live in it are free without fear.

The event was attended by men from several government departments, the South African Police Service (SAPS), civil society formations, and the greater community of Ward 14 including representatives from all 26 wards of Matatiele.

“Men contribute to family violence due to lack of knowledge, which is caused by failure to open up about issues that affect them and seek professional help”, said Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Momelezi Mbedla.

According to the Mayor, the establishment of this forums is to systematically institutionalise the promotion of women’s rights and to develop functional safety networks to protect and safeguard women, children and other vulnerable groups in society.

The Mayor also used Mandela Day to appeal to the community to follow on Madiba’s footsteps and realise their duty to protect women and children. He further called upon these networks to actively promote behavioural change.

Morena Thabang Koali, the Matatiele Men’s Forum chairperson, says the forum focuses on diverse programmes like psychosocial support groups, motivational visits to schools and working with non-profit organisations and non-governmental organisations.

“The Men’s Forum is open for volunteers who want to be part of the forum and who want to make sure that its vision and mission are realised,” he concluded.
