In an effort to showcase and offer government information and services to the community in an integrated manner, closer to where they live, Matatiele Local Municipality (MLM) with Department of Higher Education & Training is today Thursday, 29 February 2024 hosting a Business/Career Expo through a Mayoral Outreach Programme at North End Stadium.
The outreach is used as a launch pad to a long standing partnerships with various institutions in assisting the Municipality in its quest to shaping its community skills base in an effort to professionalise it and enable it to effectively contribute to socio – economic development and growth of Matatiele.
This Expo will see the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), government departments, National Skills Fund, institutions of higher learning, banks, entities and private sector partners imparting knowledge to Matatiele entrepreneurs, unemployed youth, businesses and all other interested parties. This with the aim of fighting unemployment and lack of skills.
One of the challenges within the Municipality is the increasing number of school drop outs. This results in a large number of young people who do not complete high school. The proportion of the working age population that is between the ages of 15 and 65 years who have obtained at least a matric or higher level of education in Matatiele is at 22.6%.
Unemployment rate in Matatiele remains at a very high levels hence the need for skills development.
